Not every electrical issue needs an immediate emergency callout, but some problems can quickly turn dangerous if left unchecked. As electricians working across Melbourne’s South Eastern suburbs — including Croydon, Ringwood, Mooroolbark, Bayswater, Lilydale and Warrandyte — we’ve seen it all.

Knowing the difference between a genuine emergency and a minor fault could save you both stress and unnecessary expense. Here’s what you need to know when it comes to urgent electrical repairs.
When You Should Call an Emergency Electrician
1. Burning Smells From Power Points or Switchboards
If you detect the smell of burning plastic or a distinct “electrical fire” odour coming from your walls, power outlets, or switchboard, it’s time to act immediately. This smell often signals wiring overheating behind the scenes, and it could progress to a fire very quickly.
What to do:
Turn off the circuit at your switchboard (if safe to access) and call for an Emergency Callout immediately.
2. Complete or Partial Power Loss (Without an Obvious Cause)
If your entire house, or a major part of it, loses power — and it’s not a known planned outage — this needs urgent attention. Power faults could point to:
- A supply problem from the street
- Internal faults at your switchboard
- Damaged cabling (e.g., storm or rodent damage)
Not all outages are life-threatening, but some can hide serious faults that get worse if left untouched. Our Power Outages Experts can diagnose whether it’s an internal or supply-side issue.

3. Water and Electricity Mixing
Any time water comes into contact with electrical fittings — whether from a flood, burst pipe, or storm damage — treat it as an emergency. Water dramatically increases the risk of electrocution and can destroy fittings and wiring.
Common signs include:
- Water dripping from ceiling light fittings
- Wet power points or switches
- Tripped safety switches after a storm
What to do:
Immediately shut off power at the main switch if it’s safe. Do not touch any wet fittings. Then call for assistance.
4. Sparks, Arcing, or Electrical “Popping” Sounds
If you see sparks from a power point, or hear popping, buzzing or sizzling noises coming from switches, wiring, or appliances, you’re witnessing electrical arcing.
Arcing is uncontrolled electricity “jumping” across gaps — it’s a leading cause of electrical fires in Australian homes.
Don’t wait for it to settle. It won’t.
5. Electric Shocks
Any time someone receives a shock — even a small one — from a fitting or appliance, you need to get the installation checked. Shocks, even mild ones, indicate a serious earth fault or insulation failure that must be rectified immediately to prevent lethal outcomes.
Shocks from taps or plumbing? That’s a particularly dangerous situation and requires urgent shutdown and investigation.
When It’s Not an Emergency (But Still Needs a Booking)
Not every annoying electrical issue is an emergency. Some common problems can usually wait for a standard appointment:
- A single power point not working
- One light fitting flickering
- A ceiling fan not operating
- An oven tripping but with no other signs of burning
While still inconvenient (and something we can assist with under normal booking hours), they don’t pose an immediate risk to life or property.
If you’re ever unsure, you’re better off making the call — we can help you work out over the phone if emergency action is needed.
