Underground Power – Stress Free!

October 13, 2024

Some types of electrical work need to be placed underground (500mm below ground in most cases, however in certain circumstances a shallower trench will suffice if the cabling is covered in concrete)

In this particular instance, a customer of ours needed power for his new electric gate, meaning a trench needed to be dug from his house across to where the gate motor was going to be installed.

Scope of Works:

Firstly we needed to provide service locating to the client, as the trench would be going across the driveway in very close proximity to Gas, NBN and live Consumer Mains cabling – we definitely don’t want to hit that! After marking out the locations of all the services, the trench was ready to be dug!

We usually work in a way that the trench is dug, cabling is laid, and then the trench is backfilled in the one day. Having an exposed trench not only creates a hazard for the client, but it also means the driveway is unusable until we’re done.

While the excavator was backfilling the trench, we worked on fitting off a weatherproof power outlet on a metal post concreted into the ground, along with running provisional data and 12-24V power cabling for “maybe” electric pedestrian gates with intercom controlled latching. (nobody wants to trench twice…)
