What Is A Switchboard:
Your switchboard is where all the circuits in your home originate from. Whether it be your oven circuit, power circuits or all your downlights – they all start at the switchboard and make their way into your home, providing you with the power and lighting you need.
Your switchboard is also the point at which all the circuits are provided with protection measures, which is governed by State and National compliance requirements and regulations. These protection measures include over current protection, as well as surge diversion protection and also electrocution protection.
If you’re upgrading your switchboard, you may even have an old Fuseboard, potentially laden with Asbestos and other harmful products, plus none of the protection levels we require in todays electrical world. This is commonly a very dangerous ticking time bomb of electrical hazards leaving homes at risk of fire, electrical faults, electrical shock and even a dreaded fatality. It’s no joke, and as you can imagine there are a lot of rules surrounding exactly how your upgrade must be done.

5 Tips for Upgrading Your Switchboard:
- Make sure your switchboard upgrade quote includes an itemised outline of what is included. You’re dealing with one of the most complicated electrical jobs in your home, and you want to be sure you know and understand the contents of the upgrade. If you feel uncomfortable asking these questions, send us the quote for a free assessment and feedback.
- Ensure your switchboard does not include common safety switches. This is a cheap, shortcut approach to providing protection at a minimal level, but causes multi circuit blackouts in the event of a fault, which you’ll want to avoid.
- Ensure equipment is specified, and not listed as “or equivalent” on the quote. We only use brands like Hager, Clipsal and NHP so if the quote doesn’t specify the brand, take note of that!
