Data Points and Ethernet in Melbourne

August 19, 2024

In the midst of internet connectivity, wireless streaming, AI and home automation there lies one core aspect we rely so heavily on…

Good internet connection.

For the standard Eastern Suburbs home in Melbourne, we so often see four people, multiple smart devices, smart TVs and voice controlled appliances. And they’re all connected to just one Modem, struggling to provide sub par WiFi signal while homeowners use a plethora of DIY plug in “boosters” to no avail. Luckily we can help you!

WIRELESS VERSUS WIRED:

Given we so strongly depend on portable handheld devices for our browsing and internet usage, its safe to say most homes in Melbourne don’t use a wired internet connection at all. But there’s a tool for every job, be it wired or wireless (WiFi).
A wireless connection refers to your device connecting to the internet without a wire or cable. Think along the lines of using an iPad or Smartphone, and you’d be using a wireless connection.

A wired connection, technically called an Ethernet Port, simply refers to plugging a device into a wall mounted data outlet socket (or Ethernet Port) to achieve a wired connection.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE:

A wireless connection, while being super convenient, does lack in data transmission ability. A comparison of the two options shows that wireless internet can only provide a few gigabits per second, while a wired connection can reach numbers of up to 10 gigabits per second.
The other big drawcard for a wired connection is reliability, whereby your connection will generally provide the same connection speed all the time.
Wireless connection speeds are greatly affected by proximity to the modem, the number of devices connected (and what their consumption is) and even the weather! When last did your Netflix binge grind to a halt when a thunderstorm started?

WHAT’S BEST FOR ME:

Everyones needs are different, so a quick chat by email or phone can help us understand your data needs in your Melbourne home or office.
We recommend connecting fixed devices to an ethernet port, such as your Working from Home station, your Smart TV, and any streaming devices or gaming consoles.
This leaves full WiFi capability for all your portable devices, which most of us can’t count on one hand anymore.

BOOSTED WIFI:

Sometimes even your WiFi signal needs help! Your stock standard Modem provided by your internet retailer is usually pretty average in terms of connection strength and range.
In this instance we’d recommend installing a Professional Grade WiFi booster, such as a Ubiquiti Lite for most domestic Melbourne install requirements. This wired booster, when mounted to your ceiling, can offer a massive improvement in range and connection strength across your entire home! This is especially handy when your home hub (the living room) is a good few metres from your Ring Doorbell, or your wireless camera system, or your kids bedrooms.
