When a Croydon homeowner reached out to us about their lighting, their main issue was frustration — their existing setup just didn’t make sense. They had a beautiful open-plan living area, but only two ceiling lights awkwardly placed in the middle of the room. The corners were dark, and the dining table was always in shadow, even during the day. Worse still, every attempt to brighten things up with lamps ended with cluttered floor space and unsightly cables.
Here’s how we helped bring the space up to standard, and improved more than just the lighting.

Job Location
Croydon, VIC 3136
Residential single-storey home built early 2000s.
The Problem: Poor Lighting Placement and Efficiency
This house originally had a pair of oyster lights (the classic glass dome type) that were spaced to suit a much older furniture layout. The homeowner had since renovated — removing a wall between the kitchen and lounge — but the lighting had never been updated to suit the new open-plan configuration.
( it turns out neither the architect or builder gave this much thought, and nor did the electrician who was involved in the renovation!)
They were also dealing with:
- Uneven light spread, especially in the dining and study nook areas
- Dated fittings with inefficient halogen globes
- Flickering lights due to ageing wiring and poor-quality fittings
- No dimming or zone control options
They were ready for a full lighting upgrade, and wanted something energy-efficient and modern — ideally with warm light for a more comfortable feel in the evenings.
The Solution: Full LED Downlight Upgrade With Smart Control Options
We started by walking the space with the homeowner, helping them visualise lighting ‘zones’ that aligned with how they actually used each part of the room — cooking, relaxing, eating, and working.
What we installed:
- 16 LED downlights in total, strategically spaced to ensure full, even coverage
- Three separate switch zones (kitchen, living, dining), with dimmers on the living and dining zones
- SAL warm-white dimmable LEDs — a good balance of brightness and comfort
- A new lighting circuit added to the switchboard, as the original circuit was overloaded
- Updated switch plates to a modern low-profile design to match the kitchen renovation
The Result: Better Light, Lower Costs, and a More Usable Space
The homeowner was thrilled. For the first time, they had functional lighting that didn’t create harsh shadows or overexpose one part of the room. The ability to dim the lights and create separate moods for dining versus lounging was a big win, and most of all, within budget!
Key improvements:
- Instant-on LED lighting with better light spread
- Estimated annual saving of $120–$180 in energy costs (compared to the old halogens)
- No more flickering or buzzing
- A much more modern look — no more glass domes and yellow light
- No more fire hazards from dangerous halogen lights

What We Often Find in Croydon Homes
Croydon, Mooroolbark and Ringwood homes — particularly those built between 1995 and 2005 — often still use original lighting layouts and fittings. We regularly find:
- Halogen downlights or oyster lights that are inefficient and hot to touch
- No zoning, making lighting either “all on” or “all off”
- Insufficient lighting in corners or where room layouts have changed
- Failure to relocate lighting during room expansions

Thinking of Replacing Your Downlights?
A lot of people wait until the globes start failing — but often, the problem is with the whole lighting system. If your downlights are flickering, or you’ve got dark corners in your living area, it might be time for a rethink.
We suggest using our in house, licensed electricians for any lighting upgrade — it’s the only way to ensure proper insulation clearance, circuit load balancing, and compliance with the latest standards.
