It’s easy to overlook the switchboard — that unassuming panel often tucked away in a cupboard, garage or outside wall. But as the nerve centre of your home’s electrical system, your switchboard plays a critical role in managing power, protecting appliances and preventing serious hazards like electrical fires or electrocution.
Whether you’re in Croydon, Ringwood or anywhere across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, here are 7 clear signs your switchboard might need an upgrade — and why acting sooner, not later, is the safer (and cheaper) move.
1. Your switchboard has ceramic fuses or no safety switches
If you’ve still got old-style ceramic fuses, it’s likely your switchboard hasn’t been touched in decades. Ceramic fuses don’t trip like modern safety switches — they rely on a thin piece of wire that melts when overloaded. They’re slow, unreliable, and provide no protection against electric shock.
What to look for: a cluster of fuse cartridges, or handwritten labels like “Lounge” or “Hot Water” directly on the panel.
If you don’t have RCDs (safety switches), you don’t have electrocution protection. That alone is a strong reason to upgrade — particularly if you have kids, elderly relatives or ever plan to rent out your property.
2. You’ve added more appliances or renovated recently
Each new appliance adds load to your circuits. Modern homes run high-demand items like split systems, induction cooktops, wall ovens, dishwashers, and multiple TVs or computers — far more than homes built even 20 years ago were wired for.
If your switchboard hasn’t been upgraded to match this demand, it can cause nuisance tripping, burnt wiring or worse.

3. Lights are flickering or circuits are randomly tripping
Persistent flickering, sudden outages or breakers tripping with no clear cause usually point to a deeper issue — often inside the switchboard.
Corroded terminals, loose connections, degraded insulation or under-rated breakers can all create unstable conditions, especially when the board is decades old.
4. The panel contains asbestos
Asbestos backboards were common up until the 1980s. While not dangerous if untouched, they become a serious health risk if you attempt to upgrade or alter the panel. The only safe route is full replacement by a licensed electrician trained in asbestos risk procedures.
We handle asbestos-backed switchboard upgrades frequently — and safely.

5. It’s full… and you need to add more circuits
Installing air con? Converting to electric hot water? Adding outdoor lighting or solar?
You’ll often need additional circuit breakers — and some old boards are completely out of space. Some also don’t support modern DIN rail mounted breakers or RCBOs, making any further changes impractical or illegal.
Upgrading makes room and future-proofs your installation for new tech like EV chargers or battery storage.
6. Melted plastic or burn marks around the breakers
Any sign of overheating, like brown marks, melted casing or that familiar acrid smell, is cause for concern. It means the breakers or terminals are running too hot — which can lead to arcing or fires.
We recommend switching off power and calling us immediately if you notice this. Emergency attendance is available if needed.
7. Your electrician won’t touch it without an upgrade
This is a common one. Homeowners often call us to install a new oven or rewire lights, only for us to pause work when we see an old, non-compliant board.
That’s because under Australian regulations, we’re not allowed to modify existing circuits without ensuring appropriate safety measures — namely, RCD protection. So if the board can’t be upgraded to meet standards, we can’t legally complete the job.

What happens during a switchboard upgrade?
A standard upgrade involves:
- Removal of the old panel and fuses
- Installation of a new enclosure
- Fitting of modern breakers and safety switches
- Labeling and rebalancing of circuits
- Testing for faults or non-compliance
It’s usually done in one day and causes only minimal disruption. In most cases, we’ll arrange for power disconnection and reconnection with your supply authority on your behalf.
Do it once, do it right
Upgrading your switchboard isn’t something you do often — it’s something you do once, properly. A good upgrade will last you decades, and gives you the confidence to safely add circuits, renovate or install solar without issue.
We work across Croydon, Ringwood, Bayswater, Lilydale, Mooroolbark and surrounding suburbs. If you’re unsure about the condition of your switchboard, we’re happy to inspect and advise — with no pressure to proceed.
