CASE STUDY — Melted 3-Phase Mains Box Emergency in Heathmont

June 11, 2025

Emergency Electrical Repair in Heathmont: Fused Mains Box Meltdown

Late on a Wednesday afternoon in Heathmont, we received an urgent call regarding a complete electrical failure. The time was 4.30pm. The caller reported a suspected mains issue after noticing lights flickering, followed by a total blackout and then… fire and smoke.

By 5.15pm, we were on site and quickly identified the problem: a melted 3-phase fused mains box. Ausnet were also on site, along with a response unit from Victorian Fire Rescue.

This type of failure is high-risk and needs swift, safe management. Mains boxes are the first point of protection in many older homes before energy supply hits the switchboard. When a mains box melts or fails, it puts the entire supply system under stress — often causing outages, potential fire risk and total disruption of electrical supply.

On Site: Initial Inspection and Safety Controls

Upon arrival, we began with safety isolation and immediate hazard management. The box had partially collapsed internally from heat damage, and signs of arcing were present. Given the extent of internal fuse damage and cable degradation, a repair was not an option. The box required full replacement to meet current regulations.

An additional complication? The original install did not comply with modern standards, meaning we couldn’t legally re-energise the system without correcting a few long-overdue safety issues.

Temporary Supply Not Possible — Fast Return the Next Morning

Because of these compliance constraints — and the need to source approved gear that could handle the 3-phase load safely — we scheduled an urgent return first thing the next morning.

By 7.30am Thursday, we were back on site. Over the next 90 minutes, we:

  • Removed the damaged fused mains box
  • Installed a modern, regulation-compliant 3-phase enclosure
  • Terminated the cables with correct segregation and mechanical protection
  • Issued a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the works

By 9am, all works were completed and we’d placed the call to AusNet Services to arrange for re-energisation of the property.

Power Back Online by Midday — Minimal Downtime, Maximum Safety

AusNet attended promptly and restored supply just before midday Thursday. All circuits tested correctly on reconnection. No further faults were identified, and the customer was back online with a system that now met current safety standards — and would remain stable for years to come.

Why This Happens: Fused Mains Boxes and Aging Infrastructure

This kind of failure isn’t uncommon in suburbs like Heathmont, Bayswater and Ringwood where older homes often still run on original 1960s–80s mains hardware. Fused mains boxes — usually ceramic or bakelite enclosures — are vulnerable to heat stress, loose connections, and unbalanced 3-phase loads.

Once they begin to fail, it often goes unnoticed until something dramatic happens — like a complete meltdown or burn-out.

The warning signs:

  • Buzzing or crackling noises near your switchboard
  • The smell of burning insulation
  • Light flicker or brownouts when appliances are switched on
  • Warm or discoloured fuse enclosures

Lessons for Homeowners: Act Before the Emergency

Emergencies like this one highlight how critical it is to assess the age and condition of your supply infrastructure — especially for those living in older homes or managing investment properties. If your home still has ceramic fuses or an old fused mains box, it’s not just a matter of convenience — it’s a matter of safety.
