Top 5 Causes of House Fires in Australia During Winter — And How to Prevent Them

April 20, 2025

As temperatures drop, the risk of house fires in Australian homes rises — and fast. While winter is the perfect time to get cosy with a heater or cook up comfort food, it’s also the season when some of the most common fire hazards are at their worst.

Safety Switches greatly reduce fire risks in your home

As local Croydon and Surrounds electricians, we see this every year — fires that could’ve been prevented with just a bit of foresight. So here are the top 5 causes of house fires during winter in Australia, and more importantly, how you can stay safe.

1. Portable Heaters & Electric Blankets

Why it’s risky:
Old or faulty heaters and electric blankets are one of the biggest culprits of winter fires. They can overheat, spark, or short circuit — especially if they’re not maintained or used correctly.

What you can do:

  • Never leave heaters or blankets running unattended or overnight.
  • Keep heaters at least one metre away from anything flammable (curtains, furniture, clothes).
  • Check cords and plugs for wear and tear.
  • Don’t overload power boards.

2. Overloaded Power Boards & Faulty Wiring

Why it’s risky:
In winter, we plug in more things — heaters, dryers, electric blankets, kettles — often all at once. This can overload older circuits or cheap power boards, leading to overheating or electrical fires.

What you can do:

  • Avoid “daisy-chaining” multiple power boards.
  • Only use high-quality, surge-protected power boards.
  • If your home’s wiring is old (especially in homes built before the 1980s), it might be time for an electrical safety inspection.
  • Hire a licensed electrician to install extra power points if needed or even upgrade your switchboard

3. Kitchen Fires (Especially Unattended Cooking)

Why it’s risky:
More soups, roasts, and hot meals mean more time in the kitchen. But most kitchen fires start when people walk away from cooking — especially with oils or open flames.

What you can do:

  • Never leave cooking unattended, especially when using oil or gas.
  • Keep flammable items (tea towels, paper, curtains) away from stovetops.
  • Install a fire blanket and a fire extinguisher nearby — and know how to use them.

4. Candles & Open Flames

Why it’s risky:
Candles and even wood fireplaces add warmth and ambience — but they’re also an open fire hazard. Pets, kids, or even a breeze through the window can knock over a candle or blow a spark.

What you can do:

  • Use flameless LED candles for mood lighting.
  • Keep open flames well away from curtains, books, or anything that burns.
  • Fully extinguish candles and fireplaces before going to bed or leaving home.

5. Clothes Drying Too Close to Heaters or Fireplaces

Why it’s risky:
Drying clothes indoors in winter is common — but placing them near a heater or fireplace can be dangerous. Clothes can catch fire if they get too hot or fall onto the heat source.

What you can do:

  • Always keep drying racks at least one metre away from heaters or fires.
  • Never dry clothes directly on heaters or in front of bar heaters.
  • Use a dryer with proper ventilation or hang clothes in a well-ventilated area.
